Autism Inclusion High School Resource Bases - Staffordshire County Council

Staffordshire County Council offers specialist support for autistic students through three Autism Inclusion High School Resource Bases. These bases are integrated within mainstream high schools, providing a dedicated learning hub for students in Years 7-11 while enabling them to participate in mainstream lessons with tailored support.

Locations:

  • Norton Canes High School
  • The Wilnecote School
  • The Orme Academy

Eligibility:

  • Students must have a Staffordshire Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or confirmation that an EHCP has been agreed. Their primary area of need must be social communication and interaction differences.

  • Students must have a formal diagnosis of autism or a historical working diagnosis. Additional criteria are required for students with a historical working diagnosis; please contact AIT for further information.

  • Students must live in Staffordshire and be able to access a mainstream school environment.
  • Students must be aware of their diagnosis.

Referral Process:

Referrals for a high school resource base place are made through the student's current Autism Inclusion Team caseworker. This process is separate from the school admission process and is managed by the Autism Inclusion Team and not through the school. Places may be available throughout the academic year. Once a placement is available and applications are received, an admission panel meeting is scheduled.

Composition of an admissions meeting:

The Head of STSS (AIT, HI & VI)

The AIT Team Manager

Senior Ed. Psychologist

SEND Operational Lead

Specialist Teacher AIT, TLR Holder

Following the admissions meeting, the files of students deemed suitable for a resource place are sent to the host school for consideration.

If the school agrees to the placement, the AIT caseworker, current setting and parents are contacted. The resource teacher will then arrange for parents/carers to visit the resource base. Once parents/carers have officially accepted the placement, transition sessions can begin.
